The Madeleine d'Houet Fine arts department is presenting their end of year showcase and has prepared a night filled with visual and performing art. All of the school's bands will be performing various works of celebrated wind band repertoire. The night will begin with the AIBF gold award winning MDH Honor Band, consisting of grade 8 and 9 students, followed by the grade 7, 8, and 9 concert bands. Each band will feature at least one piece that highlights the dark and mysterious theme of our soiree. The MDH grade 9 concert band will conclude the night by premiering David Marlatt's "The Forgotten Fair". This piece of work, composed by Canadian composer, David Marlatt, was commissioned for the Madeleine d'Houet grade 9 concert band who received this year's Floyd Williamson trophy for the most outstanding junior high band in Calgary. The Forgotten Fair, is a musical composition that depicts the journey to a lost circus and entails three works entitled "Kensington Celebration", "The 3 Rings", and "The Carnival of Shadows". Throughout the work, you will hear different sections, each representing a specific interaction with characters from within the circus. The music goes from a chearful fanfare, to the darkness that looms behind the scenes, and ending in a race to escape. The MDH Fine Arts department have prepared many forms of visual art, highlighting the ideas outlined in Marlatt's compostion. Our Art department will set the theme with works that illustrate this circus, the characters, and the darkness that is the Fogotten Fair, helping the audience visually prepare for the show. Our Drama department will continue by transporting the audience through a murder mystery that takes a detective into the depths of our circus, all the while being terrified for his life.
