The Calgary Youth Orchestra, led by Music Director Edmond Agopian, will conclude their season with a performance of Hector Berlioz’ masterpiece Symphonie Fantastique.

Unlike most large-scale symphonic works, Symphonie Fantastique is an “instrumental drama” that tells the story of an artist’s despair as a result of unrequited love, and subsequent hallucinations due to opium poisoning. Leonard Bernstein described it as the “first musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature”.

The concert will also include music by Beethoven, Penderecki, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, featuring cello soloist Sua Kwoun, the winner of the 2018 Frank Simpson Concerto Competition.
